Aaron's Departure

Hello all ye faithful readers,
Sad news, Aaron has left the two man team that makes us the Abilene Revuers. Do not fret, Daniel is still here. I can take care of it, but Aaron is on to other areas of interests and I wish him much happiness in his new endeavors. I would just like to take this quick time out to say that I wish him well.
Goodbye good sir, you will be missed, especially when I'm sitting in the theater alone, without you. :-)
-Daniel

You're a friend and a confidant...

Hey everyone,
I know this is a little late coming, but I've been super busy.
I'd like to take this time to say that we will miss Estelle Getty. If you do not know who this is, she is the little old mom on The Golden Girls. She is the reason that some nights at midnight I have the channel on my tv turned to Lifetime. She is the reason I love watching The Golden Girls. That show had me laughing a lot. It stands up to the test of time too. It really makes sense and even though I was a little boy or even a baby when it was on the air and not reruns, I still can watch it and laugh. So we will miss your fun and your heart Estelle Getty.

Guess Who's Back?

Hey Everyone,
I'm sure you missed my reviews of things, although, I'm sure Aaron did a great job without me. (I'm being goofy if you haven't caught on yet).
I missed each and every one of you and I'm happy to report that all is well in Hungary. I had a great trip and an awesome experience. Mission work is great!
I'm very excited for the movie we will be reviewing this week: Hellboy 2 The Golden Army. This movie is going to blow our minds, at least that is what I've heard from fellow reviewers who have already seen the film.
Well, I'll talk to ya'll later!

The Double Edged Sword Known As Movie Trailers

I love movie trailers. I might even go so far as to say that movie trailers are one of my favorite aspects of the theater. Exciting previews of the newest thrills to spend my money on the next time I visit. However, there are several movie trailer habits that I've begun to notice that have me thinking twice before buying into the hype. I post them here in the hopes that I'm not the only one left perking an eyebrow at these shenanigans.

-Showing all of the funny moments in the preview: You see the trailer and it's hilarious. You know that it's a movie you have to see. However, when you get there you realize the movie is just a slightly more plot driven sequence for the jokes you've already seen to be shown again. Take Shrek 3 for example. I went to that movie knowing that it would be as funny as the first two because the trailer told me it would be. Then, total letdown. I realize that movie studios feel the need to make money, but when tickets are around $8 a person, don't they owe it to us to show some of the not-so-funny scenes so we can be warned of what we're getting ourself into? I think so.

-Previews totally misrepresenting the movie: My mind instantly goes to The Village on this one. The trailer told me I was going to see a movie about a small village that lives in fear of horrifying creatures. Instead, I was treated to *lame spoiler alert* a slow examination of people running away from the real world. Where were my monsters? Gone after the first 40 minutes or so. I might have liked this movie a lot more if I hadn't felt so cheated by the trailer.

-Including alluring scenes that aren't really in the film: Two examples of this are The Love Guru and Wanted, though I'm sure it's fairly common. In both cases, the previews show suggestive scenes including the attractive female leads undressed or making advances on the male lead. Get to the movie, and those scenes are nowhere to be found. I'm not particularly interested in those scenes (seeing other guys getting action doesn't do it for me), don't advertise things that aren't there.

If there are other things that drive you nuts about movie trailers, let Danny and I know in the Movie segment of the forums. Keep your eye out for this week's movie review: Hellboy 2: The Golden Army.

Memorial To George Carlin

Sunday, George Carlin passed away of heart failure at the age of 71. Love him for his irreverent humor and unique view of the world or hate him for it, you cannot deny his impact on the comedy world. In remembrance, we're posting several of his quotes below.

"When someone asks you, A penny for your thoughts, and you put your two cents in, what happens to the other penny?"

"If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn't it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted?"

"Some national parks have long waiting lists for camping reservations. When you have to wait a year to sleep next to a tree, something is wrong."

"Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy."

"The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

Mr. Carlin, you will be missed.

Introductions Part II

I guess now I have to introduce myself...

My name is Daniel and I'm also a Web Producer/Assistant Producer at KRBC/KTAB News. I'm from Southlake, Texas (no I didn't go to Carroll High School). I came to Abilene for school at ACU and ended up working in the news business after I graduated. I love my job and everything I do. Also, you can sometimes find me at one of the Gamestops, I work there part time too. Like Aaron, I too love entertainment and I can be picky about what I do or see. I love music and movies so much. I also make short films and music videos in my spare time and play in an acoustic band.

This blog really is our chance to show you a bit of ourselves, so you can know who are reviewing your movies, music, games, tv, etc...

I will be out of town for a tiny bit as I am going overseas on a mission trip. I will blog about my experiences just to let you know whats going on.

Well, time to get back to work.

-Danny.

Introductions

Welcome to the entertainment page on bigcountryhomepage.com! Danny and I both agreed that we should introduce ourselves, but I beat him to it.

My name is Aaron and I'm a web producer/assistant producer for KTAB/KRBC News. Originally from Colorado Springs, Colorado, I came to Abilene for school and liked it so much I decided I'd stick around. I was recently married to my best friend Laura, but she's indulgent enough to let me out to see movies for this page. I enjoy entertainment of all kinds, but can be picky when it comes to what I enjoy.

This little blog is our chance add a personal touch to the entertainment page. You'll hear our thoughts on entertainment news as well as anything else that may find it's way in here. Danny's the chattier one, so I'll let him take it from here. I'm out.
